Phoneography and Non-SLR Digital Devices Photo Challenge: Architecture

From Lens and Pens by Sally we have the 4th Monday Challenger’s Choice (Pick One: Abstraction, Animals, Architecture, Food Photography, Night Photography, Objects, Portraiture, Still Life, Street Photography, and Travel). (Animals and Objects are themes.)

HEALTH CENTRAL HOSPITAL
Ocoee, FL

The photos below were all taken facing the west side of the hospital. The next time I’m over that way and have more time, I hope to take more pictures from different sides and angles. It is, to say the least, an interesting piece of architecture.

These pictures were taken on a bright sunny day with my iPhone5. I’m hoping that one of these days iPhone or some phone company will come up with a way that you can actually see the screen in daylight and have a clue of what kind of picture your’re taking with your camera phone. Until then, it’s hit and miss on almost all my outdoor shots!

In a nationwide contest Health Central Hospital was named the 7th Most Beautiful Hospital in America.

You can’t miss this building’s iconic “big red wedge” built as part of a 1993 structure that replaced the original 1952 facility. The current 440,000 square-foot, 171-bed acute care hospital and physicians’ offices include a recently updated 34-bed emergency center. HKS was the architect and interior designer.

Phoneography Challenge, the Phone as Your Lens: Macro

It’s the second Monday of the month and that means it’s Macro Monday at Lens and Pens by Sally.  All pictures were taken with my iPhone5 and cropped in Fotor.

To give you an idea of how tiny these flowers/weeds are, those are blades of grass surrounding it!

As for the following flowers, I have no clue what they are. I do know they look like they’re ready for spring to make up its mind if it’s staying!

Phoneography Challenge: Nature

The first Monday of the month challenge from Lens and Pens by Sally is nature.

A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in my living room and heard a big ruckus in the back yard. I ran out because our neighborhood has some stray cats and I was afraid some vulture or something was attacking. Much to my surprise, I saw two large birds that looked like white owls, who were either fighting or mating, fall from the tree. When I realized, I quickly ran back into the house to grab my phone. By the time I got back out, one was flying away and the other one was waaaayy up in another tree. I zoomed my lens and quickly tried to catch him as best I could. He/she was so pretty. It’s just not a sight I see around here very often, especially in the day time. It was shot with my iPhone5 and just cropped a bit in Fotor. I realize it’s not a very good shot because you can barely see the owl and it’s blurry.

The next one is an early morning sunrise that was taken at Lake Apopka this past May using my iPhone5. I have not edited it. How many birds can you find? Can you find the alligator?

Phoneography Challenge: Black & White

The third Monday of the month challenge from Lens and Pens by Sally is black and white.  I was in downtown Orlando in January on another Monday holiday and took this photo in front of City Hall.  The following is an excerpt taken from an article in the Orlando Sentinel on July 23, 2013 by Scott Maxwell:

…Florida officials celebrated news that the state’s homeless population is shrinking.

But not in Central Florida.

Here, it is on the rise.

Yes, the same Council on Homelessness report that found a 17 percent drop statewide cited a 29 percent increase in Orange County.

***

And a 50 percent increase over the last five years.

Phoneography Challenge: Macro

The second Monday of the month at Lens and Pens by Sally is the Phoneography Challenge: Macro.  I picked a photo that I took last month at the Leu Gardens in Winter Park. This was part of the section highlighting arid plants. From the Leu Gardens website:

Arid Garden
This area displays a wide variety of plants that are drought tolerant. Many come from areas that are seasonally dry or from desert regions. Some types of plants found here include acacias, agaves, aloes, bromeliads, cacti, flowering trees, palms, succulents and yuccas.

I love what Sally had to say on her post about macro photography. Her challenge has opened my eyes to some of the wonders around me that I probably would have just walked by in the past. This challenge has me trying things with my iPhone camera I wouldn’t have thought of!  I hope she doesn’t mind that I’m copying a statement from her but I love what she said:  “There is a moment when something is revealed and unveiled that truly stuns.” So very true!

Phoneography Challenge: Black and White Monday

It’s black and white Monday at Lens and Pens by Sally.  I selected a photo that I took with my iPhone5 on a very overcast day from my front yard.  The original was not shot in black and white but it was certainly a black and white day!  So editing to black and white in the different apps just made subtle changes.

I pulled the following from Sally’s post (I hope she doesn’t mind). I found the explanation for how we perceive black and white very interesting:

“Science explains it this way: A surface which contains all colors will be seen as black, because the viewer perceives that no colors are being reflected. Whereas to realize white, the observer sees all colors reflected. This explanation is the path to: black is color and white is not.”

Phoneography Challenge: Macro

Today is Macro Monday on Lens and Pens by Sally.  A while back I had my little cat, Inky, sitting on my lap and became fascinated with her eyes.  Not to equate it, but when I was a kid I collected cat’s eye marbles (I was never able to have a cat until I was an adult)! Wish I still had them.  But I digress. I started looking at her eyes and my iPhone was right beside me. Although she didn’t sit still for very long, below are a few of the shots I managed (quite awkwardly, too, I might add!).  All pictures were taken using my iPhone 5.  Enjoy!

Phoneography Challenge: Architecture

This Monday is Challenger’s Choice on Lens and Pens by Sally.  I chose some architecture pictures I’ve taken.  This is our “new” City Hall in Winter Garden.  It was built in 2008.  I love that it has an art deco style to it.  I don’t know much about architecture but I know what I like!  I didn’t have time to do anything to these but auto correct and upload! Pictures were taken in October and again over the last few days.

Phoneography Challenge: Nature (in crisis)

It’s Phoneography Challenge Monday for Nature (in crisis)!  I’ve chosen one of the photos I took on our recent visit to Silver Springs State Park near Ocala, FL.

LIFE FROM THE DEAD

Even after death, trees abound with other forms of life.  Bacteria are decomposing the plant tissues.  Termites, woodboring beetles and carpenter ants are feeding within.  These are eaten by woodpeckers, lizards, toads and shrews.

The web of life will, in time, reduce this tree to a rich brown area of humus on the forest floor – waiting to be used by other living things.
