From Nancy Merrill Photography comes this latest challenge: IN A NEW POST CREATED FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A PHOTO OR TWO OF ANIMALS THAT AREN’T PETS (NOT DOMESTICATED).
Thanks, Cybele. At least they were a pair. I’m not a fan of zoos anymore. It just breaks my heart to see these creatures behind fences and walls. Mixed emotions. They’d probably be dead if left on their own.
Re: Zoos. I can’t remember the animal behaviorist’s name, but on NPR recently, there was one who talked about his work with animals in zoos (he was originally anti-zoo, but as he studied in college, he saw an opportunity to help zoo animals have more enrichment and less of a cage-minded mentality and, thus, a better life). He made a really compelling argument, and I’m afraid we will “need” more of these such facilities as, for a multiplicity of reasons (different for each animal, habitat, etc.), we might be undergoing what many scientists are calling the “sixth extinction.” I’m not sure if my grandchildren, should I have any, sadly, will have any conception of what an elephant in the wild is, for instance. But I definitely ditto the mixed emotions about zoos. aquariums, and the like (and some places are obviously better for the animals than others are)!
Some zoos are my favorites. This one in Orlando does not fall into that category! It seems small and cramped and it makes me sad. But the first pic was taken in a neighborhood not far from here! They were just roaming the park! 😀
Love all these, Linda, but I think the first one is my favorite. I’m not sure what kinds of birds those are, but I love how the curve of their necks contrast against the straight lines in the background, like of the fencing and posts, as well as the tree in the foreground. The vibrant background green also grabbed my eye.
Hi Linda, thanks so much for the visit! Love the eagle pic. We have eagles in the Decorah, Iowa area that come back to the same nest each year. There is a wildlife group that watches them and have set up a live video feed. It is awesome to watch the babies grow and then fly off. Amazing beautiful birds! Great photos!
Great eagle capture! Not easy to get such a shot of these fellas. 🙂
Thanks, Sue. I must confess this is a cheater photo! He can’t fly and was rescued and lives at the zoo. Poor baby.
Great interpretation for this challenge Linda …Stunning images .
Thanks bunches, Jake! 😀

Thanks, Leigh, my sentiments exactly. Such mixed emotions when it comes to the subject of zoos! You expressed it well. 🙂

Thanks so much, Janice! I love eagles. I felt bad for this one because he can’t fly anymore. But he does have a decent life and is used to educate. 🙂
